About The Rodale Institute®

Located on a beautiful 333-acre farm in Berks County, Pennsylvania, The Rodale Institute® is a non-profit organization devoted to innovative agricultural research, training, outreach and education. Founded in 1947 by J.I. Rodale who coined the term “organic,” The Rodale Institute promotes organic and regenerative agriculture as a means of renewing environmental and human health. The Institute shares its cutting edge programs with farmers, consumers, food industry leaders, policy makers and children. In addition to educational and training programs offered at the farm, the Institute’s influence reaches worldwide through regenerative farming programs in Japan, West Africa and Central America. The Institute is chaired by J.I. Rodale’s grandson, Anthony Rodale, a recent recipient of the Organic Trade Association Organic Leadership Award.

Featured Programs
The Rodale Institute Farming Systems Trial®
Now in its 23rd year, the Farming Systems Trial (FST) is the world’s longest-running, continuous agricultural experiment comparing organic and conventional farming practices. The FST compares three distinct cropping systems to determine their economic and environmental impacts:
  • Conventional, with typical inputs of standard agricultural fertilizers and pest control chemicals.
  • Organic / Manure-based, using animal manure as a primary nitrogen source for heavy-feeding crops such as corn.
  • Organic / Legume-based, using “green manure” crops as the primary nitrogen source. The study has resulted in a wealth of information on yields, economic returns, soil quality and environmental data.

    The New Farm®
Through The New Farm research and training programs and its web site, www.newfarm.org, The Rodale Institute® reaches a global community of food producers to exchange valuable “farmer-to-farmer know-how.” NewFarm.org presents compelling success stories with expert resources for crop and livestock production, direct marketing, local food systems, policy campaigns and community collaborations. The web site features the new Organic Price Index™, the first ever-wholesale pricing tool organic farmers can use to market their products competitively. NewFarm.org is available in Japanese and will soon offer a French West African version.
