MaraNatha Sweetens the Deal!
New natural Almond and Peanut butters sweetened with organic honey crystals

San Leandro, Calif. — MaraNatha® Nut Butters ( today announced new Honey Almond Butter and Honey Peanut Spread, strengthening its role as the best selling brand of Peanut Butters and Almond Butters in natural and organic stores.

MaraNatha (pronounced “mare–uh–NAH–thuh”) expects that the new, sweetened products will be the ideal entry point for Americans hungry for a healthier alternative to leading conventional brands.

“Consumers love the taste of nuts and honey,” said Stacey Kelly, MaraNatha’s director of consumer marketing. “People who are accustomed to the taste of Jif and Skippy will appreciate getting all the flavor, without all the additives and trans fats.”

The ingredient list is surprisingly short for products intending to lure mainstream consumers: nuts, organic honey crystals, and sea salt. Organic honey crystals – created by coating organic sugar cane crystals with a thin layer of organic honey – are considered the key to the products’ perfect balance of sweetness.

Sales of flavored nut butters, including honey and other sweetened flavors, grew 33 percent in 2004, according to SPINS data analyzed by Susan Clough, director of trade marketing with nSpired™ Natural Foods, the parent company of the MaraNatha brand. Overall peanut butter consumption has reached an estimated 1.2 billion pounds annually, according to the Alexandria, Va.–based American Peanut Council. Almond butter sales increased 12% over the previous year, and are expected to continue to rise.

MaraNatha products – handcrafted in small batches in Ashland, Ore., for more than 20 years – contain no hydrogenated oils, preservatives or trans fats. Trans–fats, present in many other commercial nut butters, have been shown to raise LDL cholesterol, increasing the risk of coronary heart disease.

The new Honey Almond Butter is available in 12–ounce jars and is expected to retail for about $8.99. The Honey Peanut Spread is available in 12–ounce and 26–ounce jars, retailing for approximately $3.49 and $5.99, respectively.

MaraNatha products, which include almond, peanut, cashew, and macadamia nut butters, can be found in natural food stores throughout the United States.
