National Legislation

Though child nutrition reauthorization is being pushed past the original September 30th deadline, the Community Food Security Coalition continues to build support for Farm to Cafeteria proposals. Both the House and Senate are considering Farm to Cafeteria legislation in the context of their larger overhaul of the child nutrition programs.

Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) included a section on Farm to Cafeteria in S.R.995, the "Child Nutrition Initiatives" Act. This bill, referred to the Senate Agriculture committee, has gained support on varied fronts and will be included in the debate on Child Nutrition Reauthorization.

In the House, Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI) and Rep. Ron Kind (D-WI) sponsored H.R. 2626 the "Farm to Cafeteria Projects Act," which has been referred to the House Education and Workforce committee. Twenty-two Representatives have co-sponsored H.R. 2626. This bipartisan coalition is nearly equally split between Republicans and Democrats, and support continues to grow for this measure.
